Introduction:
This report will discuss the importance of determining the state of electrical systems used onboard aircraft. The methods of determining the state of the system being discussed are direct measuring, circuit jointing, and circuit measuring method. As well as discuss the most effective method and possible faults that can occur when conducting these methods.
Writing Process:
The technical report I wrote was “Methods Used to Determine The State of Aircraft Electrical systems components.” The first step I took in writing my report was to decide on one topic and whether or not it would be specific to an aircraft or general aircraft. Thus when I decided to focus on general aircraft, I focused my research on the general methods for specifically general aviation maintenance practices of electrical systems. Throughout my report, I struggled with structure and visual representations of the methods I was trying to convey. Something that was really helpful to the development of my report was the takeaways from the peer review sessions. The feedback I had received were suggestions regarding the structure and incorporating schematics into the report, in such a way that would be easy for the reader to understand the contents of the report. As shown on pages 5-7 the use of schematics and images tied together with the report structure, allows the audience to visualize the applications of the methods used. My main takeaways from this assignment were identifying the intended audience, proper structure, and tailoring research specifically to topic.
Introduction:
Boeing introduced the first B737 aircraft on Jan 17, 1967, since then the production of B737 aircraft increased due to a demand for its most popular feature; which is the ability to take more passengers per load a desirable feature for commercial flight. Auxiliary power units also known as an APU, were initially marketed in the aviation industry as emergency backup engines in the event of engine failure. Also, they were most commonly used only in military aircraft. However, as aviation technology advanced and commercial aviation became a profitable business safety and security became increasingly important. Thus the Axuilary power unit began to integrate more within the commercial aircraft systems and started to become a necessity; such as being used with passenger systems such as air-conditioning.
Writing Process:
The Technical description I wrote about was how an auxiliary power unit works onboard the B737 aircraft. The process of writing my technical description was difficult at first since there were so many topics within aviation in which I wanted to choose. The first step was to narrow down my options to a topic that aligned with my career interests within mechanical engineering. By doing so I thought it would make the research more exciting to conduct since it would be something I’m passionate about. Despite having worked on APUs for a short period of my career I thought it would be interesting to conduct more research on how exactly an auxiliary power unit operates. Usually, aviation maintenance requires extensive knowledge of parts and systems so writing the technical description actually helped me better understand the auxiliary power unit. Something I struggled with was finding images with specific components pertaining to just the APU since the system interwinds with many other aircraft systems. Instead what I was able to do was create a flow chart highlighting the components related solely to the APU and their positions throughout the system. Another challenge was the use of technical words throughout my report, although my intended audience was aviation enthusiasts, it was also important that I consider the different levels of understanding the audience has. Thus I experimented with including an index at the end but through my peer’s suggestion, this would be difficult for the reader they would have to continuously flip to the back to read the definition. Instead what worked best was implementing a superscript to each technical word that I believed was critical for the understanding, and included the definition at the bottom of each page corresponding to the superscript number. One of the main takeaways from the peer reviews was including the history of the Boeing company and its APU manufacturer. By including this at the beginning of my description it help set the tone of my report and served as an abstract. Also being able to identify the inconsistent vocabulary and receive feedback helped develop my writing skills, particularly in this assignment.
Company Background:
We, at Elite Mechanical Groups Incorporated, understand the struggle of having to maintain HVAC systems in a large building. Our firm exists to ease the loads that come with such predicaments. With our immense experience in the field and large workforce of over twenty full-time employees, we are fully equipped to handle the work required by ESD.
Writing Process:
Responding to a request for proposal was a group collaboration. The group I worked with decided to respond to an RFP that pertained to HVAC maintenance in the Empire State Development. My main role was to establish a contract and draft references. Pages 6-10 outline the partnership contract and references requested by the ESD. While writing the partnership contract it was important to reestablish the work being done and the terms. The special terms included in the contract were the right’s Elite Mechanical Groups.Inc. reserves to use subcontractors to complete the scope of work to be done. This was included in the event our engineers aren’t certified at the moment to complete the service being requested. Our terms of termination are as follows; Consultant may terminate this agreement immediately at any time if the company fails to pay for the service provided by Elite Mechanical Groups.Inc. and or the ESD may terminate the contract at any time provided they provide us with a thirty-day written notice. The main takeaways from this assignment were developing a professional contract along with suitable references for our response. For this assignment, I worked closely with my group members to keep consistent vocabulary throughout our responses.
